Singaporean singer Joanna Dong, 42, revealed on Jun 29 that she recently had a minor surgery after noticing "bloody discharge from (her) right breast". After going through a few tests and scans, Joanna was told that there was a sizeable area of blood pooling in the ducts on both her breasts, believed to be Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) – pre-invasive breast cancer that's usually classified as stage 0.

Following a biopsy, Joanna was "greatly relieved to find no cancer". However, given that there were "atypical cells" on her right breast, she went through a minor surgery on Jun 28 to have a "relatively small segment excised and (her) ducts removed."

Sharing a picture of herself in the hospital, Joanna said that the reason she posted about her experience was because she felt that "talking about our breasts really should be destigmatised by now".

She also went on to thank the healthcare professionals who took care of her as well as those who sent her their well wishes. She added that she was thankful to her younger self for getting a "solid" insurance policy, recommending that everyone, especially freelancers in the arts, get their policies in check.

While she is recuperating, Joanna Dong will miss a few rehearsals for the upcoming National Day Parade, in which she is scheduled to perform. Performing in her place will be singer Tay Kexin, who is a member of the vocal group MICappella. In an Instagram Story on Jun 30, Joanna reshared a video of Kexin performing at a rehearsal and praised her, saying "She ate!"

Joanna Dong first gained fame as a contestant in the first season of the singing competition Singapore Idol where she placed within the top 40. Over the years, Joanna has release multiple tracks and starred in various musicals including If There’re Seasons and Liao Zhai Rocks.

In 2017, Joanna took part in the second season of the Chinese reality talent show Sing! China where she was a member of Jay Chou's team. Joanna ended up placing third that season.
