Our Honest Review Of The Dyson Airstrait: It Dries & Straightens Hair Simultaneously, But Is The Airstrait Worth It?

The latest hair innovation on the market is the Dyson Airstrait, a hair tool that is touted to simultaneously dry and straighten hair — and without any heat damage to your hair too, the brand says. That’s because the Airstrait eschews the usual hot plates in regular straighteners, and instead, uses airflow to tame the mane. In a nutshell, the Dyson Airstrait promises to save you time and hassle — and your hair from heat damage.

It all sounds promising, but the Airstrait does have a pretty price tag of $799. So naturally, our expectations were high with this one. Can high-velocity hot air straighten hair just like traditional, albeit more damaging, hot plates? Does it live to the hype, and is it worth the money? We used the device for over a week and here’s our honest review of the Dyson Airstrait.

Dyson Airstrait, $799, available in Prussian Blue/Rich Copper and Nickel/Copper. Buy it at Dyson’s offical stores on Lazada, Shopee, and website.

Dyson Airstrait: Features at a glance

  • Dries and straightens hair at the same time
  • Straightens hair using high-velocity hot air, instead of clamping hair between hot plates. This makes it less damaging and helps maintain coloured hair.
  • Up to 25 per cent time-saving, according to Dyson.
  • 3 modes: Wet (80°C, 110°C, and 140°C) , Dry (120°C, 140°C and boost mode), Cool mode to set the style.
  • 2 airflow control settings – high and low.

What it’s really like using the Dyson Airstrait

After using it for over a week, my verdict on the Dyson Airstrait: This nifty little device really does deliver.

Pros of using the Airstrait:

  • Saves time and simplifies hair routine
  • Hair goes from wet to dry to straight in 8 to 10 minutes. Each section of hair only requires 2-3 passes to go from wet to straight.
  • Easy to use, even for newbies or the uncoordinated.
  • Results can last for an entire day.
  • Hair feels softer than usual.

Cons:

  • Some users have feedbacked that it can feel heavy after a while.
  • The cost.

While I do not have frizzy or curly hair, my shoulder-length hair is on the thicker side, and is slightly wavy, unruly and well, puffy. I’ve spent too much time and money on various hair treatments to tame these stresses, I mean, tresses, so I was eager to see if the Dyson Airstrait is a fuss-free alternative.

We test out the Dyson Airstrait, $799, which is available in two colourways. Buy it at LazadaShopee and Dyson’s website.

First off, it’s easy to use right out of the box. Just plug in the Airstrait, choose your desired mode (a small digital display shows the options), and start with rough drying your roots for a couple of minutes (essential for healthy hair in general). Yes, you can keep both arms of the Airstrait locked and it functions as a hairdryer. Once done, start straightening by unlocking the arms.  My hair did not feel like it was being pulled or tugged or, worse, caught in the device in the process. As someone who routinely gets accidentally scalded with other hair tools, not having to struggle with the device is a plus.

On the time-saving front, it’s a major plus. It takes me about eight to 10 minutes to go from towel-dried hair to neat, straight bob using the wet-to-dry mode. It only took two to three passes for each section of hair to go from a wet mess to sleek, straight and styled. The results are surprising — in a good way. The mane transformation is not only quick, but the end result is so satisfyingly sleek and my hair feels softer than if I’d blow-dried it.

The dry mode is also handy for a midday touch up, or in my case, when I had to rush out without enough time to wash my hair first. All it took was three minutes on dry mode and a blast of cool shot to set the style, and my shoulder-length bob looked much more presentable.

Before (left) and after  in less than five minutes on Dry mode.

The best part? The results last for hours, depending on your activity and hair type. Mine lasted for an entire day in the air-conditioned confines of the office, and more than half a day if I’m headed outdoors.

While some online reviews also say that it can get slightly heavy, I did not find it particularly heavy or clunky (it weighs 0.935g, as compared to the 0.66kg Supersonic). However, this could be a different experience for folks with super long hair or need more time to tame that mane.

What about folks with wavy or frizzy hair? Online reviewers who’ve tried report that, yes, it does indeed straighten anything from wavy tresses to frizzy or curly locks, though time taken to straighten may differ according to hair texture.

Who should invest in the Dyson Airstrait?

It took me a couple of tries to get the hang of it and to find my favourite Airstrait-ed hairstyle, and it’s been a game-changer since. It takes a couple more minutes longer than just a simple blow-dry, which usually leaves me looking like I have a ball of hay on my head anyway. I’d take the smooth, silky-looking results from the Dyson Airstrait any day. For people who want to save time and simplify their haircare routine, and yet still want salon-worthy sleek hair, this is undoubtedly a worthy investment (use it for a few years to drive the cost per use down — girl math!).

However, unlike traditional flat irons which can also be used to curl hair, the Dyson Airstrait does not allow for that (although J-curls are still possible with the Airstrait). So Dyson diehards who already have the multi-tasking Airwrap may think twice about this splurge.
