There’s An Impressive National Day Light-Up Happening In Singapore. Here’s Where To Go To See It
Painting the town red (and white) to celebrate Singapore’s 55th birthday.
Just because this year’s National Day Parade is a little different doesn’t mean our 55th birthday celebrations should be overlooked. Especially not when 10 of our favourite national monuments and institutions in the Bras Basah Precinct and Civic District will be dressing up for the occasion as part of the National Day celebrations — in red and white, of course. The massive National Day-themed light-up, the first of its kind, will see these buildings swathed in stunning digital and light projections from now until Aug 30.
The theme across the board may be National Day, but there’s a different story behind the various displays that blanket each of the buildings. For instance, the 60 original artworks that wrap the National Gallery of Singapore are by artists in Singapore, submitted via an open call.
If you’re in the mood for an evening stroll to cover all 10 sites, here’s where to go. These are the monuments and venues that will be illuminated in stunning red and white light projections until Aug 30:
#1: The Armenian Church: 60 Hill Street, Singapore 179366
#2: Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM): 1 Empress Place, Singapore 179555
#3: Cathedral of the Good Shepherd: A Queen Street, Singapore 188533
#4: Central Fire Station: 62 Hill Street, Singapore 179367
#5: CHIJMES: 30 Victoria Street, Singapore 187996
#6: Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay: 1 Esplanade Drive, Singapore 038981
#7: National Gallery Singapore: 1 St Andrew’s Road, Singapore 178957
#8: National Museum of Singapore: 93 Stamford Road, Singapore 178891
#9: The Arts House: 1 Old Parliament Lane, Singapore 179429
#10: Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall (VTVCH): 9 Empress Place, Singapore 179556
As you admire these sparkling displays meant to inspire Singaporeans to be #UnitedThroughCulture during these Covid-19 times, don’t forget why we’re here in the first place. So remember to mask up and keep a safe distance from others while you're out getting those IG shots.
The above venues will also have a slew of National Day programmes and celebrations happening online on their respective websites. So for those who are more comfortable with celebrating the nation’s birthday from home, get comfy on your couch, grab the potato chips or biscuits from your NDP Singapore Together Pack, and get clicking.
From Jul 23 to Aug 30. Various venues, 7.30pm-12am. More info at https://www.nhb.gov.sg/brasbasahbugis/whats-on/programmes/heritage-and-culture-light-up.
