Trailer watch: Jackie Chan and Wu Jing (and a horse) team up in action-comedy Ride On

Jackie Chan puts his equestrian skills to the test in his latest movie that pays homage to old-school stunt performers.

Ride On is about has-been stuntman Luo (Chan) and his stunt horse who become media darlings after footage of them fighting off debt collectors went viral.

Ride On’s Chinese title is ‘long ma jing shen’ (龙马精神)’, which literally means ‘dragon and horse spirit’, a pun on Chan’s Chinese name. (Shouldn't they release this during the CNY period?)

In the trailer, we see Chan engaging in all sorts of shenanigans, most of them involving his four-legged pal. There’s also a moment where the martial arts legend leaps off a 10-storey Ferris wheel to catch a rope ladder from a helicopter.

The movie also marks the first-on screen collaboration between Chan and ‘China’s Rambo’ Wu Jing. The latter plays an A-lister actor trying to revive Luo’s stagnant career by hiring him for his action opus.

The rest of the cast includes Andy On, Joey Yung and Liu Haocun.

Ride On opens in mainland China on Apr 7, which happens to be Chan’s 69th birthday. The movie will be out in Singapore on Apr 13.

In the animated feature — done in a hand-drawn comic-book style a la Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — Chan voices Splinter, the rodent sensei to the sewer-based hard-shelled heroes, Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr), Raphael (Brad Noon) and Donatello (Micah Abbey).

The vocal ensemble also features Rogen, Ayo Edebiri, John Cena, Hannibal Buress, Rose Byrne, Ice-Cube, Natasia Demtriou, Giancarlo Esposito, Post Malone, Paul Rudd, and Maya Rudolph.

Mutant Mayhem, which drops in cinemas on Aug 31, is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ second full-length animated feature; the last one, TMNT, came out in 2007. After that, Michael Bay produced two live-action movies, 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its 2016 sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, both starring Megan Fox and Will Arnett.
