Singapore’s UV index level is at an extreme high of 11 today (Apr 9) — again. And this searing heat isn’t about to let up soon — the National Environment Agency (NEA) has warned of hot weather and high ultraviolet (UV) levels in Singapore until June. UV index readings of 11 and above are considered extreme, while 8-10 rates as very high. What’s all the fuss over the UV levels, you ask. Prolonged UV exposure causes skin cancer, aging, cataracts and other eye issues. So, yes, it’s imperative you’re slathering on sunscreen and finding ways to minimise UV exposure.
But there’s a chance that you could be applying sunscreen wrongly or not using enough to give you the UV protection you need.
How much sunscreen do you really need?
Well, if you’ve been using just a pea-sized dot or two of sunscreen on your face, that’s not enough. Dr Rachel Ho of La Clinic took to Instagram to delve into the details of proper sunscreen application.
The aesthetic doctor explained that studies show at least 2mg of sunscreen is required per sq cm of body surface. “For an easier estimate, you can use two finger lengths of sunscreen for your face and neck separately,” explained Dr Ho, who has over 10 years of experience in dermatology. Each arm has about the same body surface as the face, so, again, two finger lengths of sunscreen for each arm, though Dr Ho maintained that you may use more as required. “I use four finger lengths of sunscreen for each arm,” she revealed.

What else to know about applying sunscreen, according to a doctor
#1: Apply sunscreen about 10-15 minutes before heading out. This allows the sunscreen to dry on the skin, and prevents it from rubbing off easily on clothing.
#2: Reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours.
#3: You need sunscreen even indoors or in the car. “Glass windows do not block out UV rays completely. Glass windows only block out some UVB rays because of their short wavelengths, but UVA rays, which have higher wavelengths, can still pass through glass windows to harm the skin. So whether you’re driving in a car or sitting next to a window, your skin can still be damaged by UV rays,” she cautioned.
#5: Using sunscreen sticks or mist sprays? Here’s how to determine how much to apply. “The recommended minimum amount from the American Academy of Dermatology for sunscreen sticks is four passes; and for sprays, spray until skin glistens,” Dr Ho elaborated. “In reality, we see that sunscreen sticks and sprays differ in their transfer of sunscreen depending on the formulation of the sticks and sprays, as well as factors like wind conditions. So if in doubt, feel free to use more.”

Besides using sunscreen of at least SPF 30, NEA has also advised the public to take extra precaution against sunburn, such as using umbrellas, sunglasses that block UVA/UVB rays and broad-brimmed hats.
