Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity. While the more affordable models deliver value and economy, they often fall short in driver engagement and style. On the other hand, EVs that excel in these areas tend to come with a higher price tag.

Soon, buyers in Singapore will no longer have to compromise when switching to electric motoring, thanks to a slew of new models from Volkswagen and Škoda, distributed by Volkswagen Group Singapore (VGS).

Dr Kurt Leitner, managing director of VGS, shared that the company aims to establish a strong presence in the EV market by catering to diverse customer needs and making a positive impact on environmental sustainability.

“The Singapore Green Plan 2030 aims for all new cars and taxis to be cleaner-energy models by 2030. VGS is aligning with this plan with a wide range of offerings,” explained Dr Leitner. “Whether customers seek a spacious and comfortable electric sport utility vehicle like the Volkswagen ID.4, a stylish option such as the ID.5 or the Škoda Enyaq Coupé, or a high-performance variant like the GTX and RS models, they can choose from up to seven EVs from across the group’s lineup, each offering a range of over 500km.”

The highly anticipated Volkswagen ID. Buzz will soon follow these models – this versatile electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) offers five-, six- and seven-seat options.

According to Dr Leitner, VGS is entering the EV market “at an ideal time” as rapid growth is driven by increasing consumer awareness of environmental sustainability and advancements in EV technology. Additionally, he noted that the growing number of charging stations across Singapore bolsters consumer confidence in EVs.

A COMMITMENT TO EV EXCELLENCE

In addition to offering a range of long-distance, high-torque EVs “tailored for Singapore”, VGS has developed comprehensive charging packages for customers, including home charger installation.

“Furthermore, our Volkswagen aftersales package offers five years of complimentary servicing and roadside assistance, a five-year vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty for added peace of mind,” said Dr Leitner. “Similarly, customers opting for Škoda models will benefit from an eight-year complimentary servicing package.”

The group’s EV range is built on its MEB (modular electric drive matrix) platform, featuring an advanced fast-charging battery unit at its core. This unit is customisable with varying numbers of battery modules to meet different range preferences. Models such as the Volkswagen ID.4, ID.5 and Škoda Enyaq offer class-leading battery ranges of over 500km, alleviating range anxiety and reducing the need for frequent recharging stops.

At the heart of the MEB platform lies a fast-charging battery system comprising different numbers of battery modules.

For ease of use and convenience, the VGS EV models tout charging speeds of up to 175kW, enabling fast charging from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.

“Drawing on decades of engineering expertise and a history of producing award-winning vehicles, our electric offerings blend modern technology with renowned driving dynamics,” shared Dr Leitner. “Whether it’s the responsiveness of the throttle or the precision handling on winding roads, our EVs enhance the exceptional driving experience that defines the Volkswagen and Škoda brands.”

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are another highlight for drivers of these EVs. Features such as Lane Assist, Travel Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control make long-distance drives or start-stop traffic conditions effortless.

While drivers must remain attentive and keep both hands on the steering wheel, ADAS technologies work seamlessly in the background to maintain a safe following distance and keep the car centred in its lane. Travel Assist can also automatically adjust the vehicle’s speed to match speed limits or even bring the vehicle to a complete stop when necessary.

With superior torque and acceleration, higher-end models such as the ID.4 GTX and Enyaq Coupé RS are designed to deliver a driving experience that rivals traditional sports cars. These models feature dual-motor all-wheel-drive systems that prioritise traction and stability for a balanced and dynamic driving experience.

METICULOUS DESIGN, INNOVATIVE COMFORT

Beyond performance, Dr Leitner assures that these EVs are built with meticulous attention to detail, designed with the comfort and needs of occupants in mind. From the ergonomic layout of controls to the high-quality materials, the Volkswagen ID. and Škoda Enyaq ranges seamlessly blend classic German engineering with futuristic design.

Styling is also a priority for the Škoda Enyaq and Enyaq Coupé. Both EVs feature 131 LEDs illuminating the vertical ribs of the striking grille, while a horizontal light strip enhances the car’s aesthetic. Inside, human touchpoints have not been overlooked. The EVs feature ErgoActive seats, developed in collaboration with orthopedic specialists, physiotherapists and sports scientists.

RETHINKING ELECTRIC MOBILITY

The Volkswagen ID.4, ID.5 and Škoda Enyaq offer class-leading battery ranges of over 500km.

With its new range of EVs, VGS has rethought electric mobility from the ground up.

The group is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, with its EV models playing a key role in combating climate change. VGS plans to reduce its production-related output of CO2, energy, water, waste and volatile organic compounds by 45 per cent compared to 2010. Additionally, it aims to increase resource efficiency by prolonging the lifecycle of its vehicles.

Improving air quality is also on the agenda. While e-mobility will contribute significantly, VGS continues to develop and improve fuel-efficient internal combustion engines (ICE) for its entry portfolio. Models like the T-Cross, Golf and Tiguan will remain available until at least 2030, ensuring that those not ready to switch to electric motoring are not left behind.

With such a diverse range of EVs, it seems like the Volkswagen Group is truly living up to its name, which literally translates to “car for the people”. Indeed, it just happens to have an EV for everyone.
