The Gucci Jackie small shoulder bag in the house’s signature Gucci Rosso Ancora leather is one of the highlights of the Gucci Ancora Spring Summer 2024 collection. Collectors will be familiar with looking after leather given its long use luxury accessories. Fashion houses however are expanding their use of materials, turning to a wide selection of natural fibres and skins.

Materials like silk, leather, wool and bamboo make for beautiful, long-lasting goods. But owners may be confused at the sheer number of options that have proliferated over the years. For example, are patent leather and coated leather the same thing? Is suede superior to velvet?

To help, we’ve highlighted some accessories and their luxurious-to-the-touch materials you might spot in designer stores. We’ve included simple tips to properly care for them in Singapore’s hot, humid climate, so you can enjoy them for years to come.

1. Gucci Jackie Small Shoulder Bag, Black Leather (S$4,600)

The latest Gucci Jackie is crafted from premium fine black leather which captures the sleek silhouette of this iconic shoulder bag. A light gold-toned hook closure, leather trim and lining make this an understated companion to any outfit. The detachable web shoulder strap with its 52cm drop offers additional versatility – so you can use it as a sling as well.

You can consider using a leather cleaner after gently wiping down with a mild leather-friendly detergent and lukewarm water. After all, leather is a skin and it needs to be cleaned, just like your face. Remember to test any product on a small unnoticeable area first.

  • Light gold-toned leather
  • Detachable web shoulder strap with 52cm drop
  • Hook closure

2. Gucci Signoria Slingback Pump (S$1,700)

Another highlight of the Gucci Ancora Spring Summer 2024 collection, the Gucci Signoria pump’s low heel suggests a shoe that’s suited for everyday wear. But there’s more to this than meets the eye – its elegant hand-stitched Gucci chain, pointed toe and shiny patent leather help elevate the Signoria pump.

Either gloss-finished or covered with film, patent leather is known for its mirror-like shine. While you can wipe down patent leather with a damp cloth, be sure to prevent light-coloured patent leather from coming into contact with dark-dyed materials like denim. Once the dye rubs off onto it, there’s no saving the leather.

  • Gucci Rosso Ancora red patent leather
  • Gucci chain, stitched by hand
  • Elastic slingback closure

3. Gucci Men’s Tennis 1977 Sneaker in Recycled Polyester (S$1,250)

Step out in style with these low-rise printed sneakers. The confident GG print adds a tongue-in-cheek attitude to these relaxed, low-key shoes, constructed from ripstop recycled polyester.

Ripstop is a woven fabric that is reinforced with crosshatch patterned yarns for strength and durability. Made from used plastic that is melted and re-spun into a new fibre, recycled polyester is more sustainable and doesn’t add to the creation of more plastic. It’s also low maintenance. Wipe down with a dry soft cloth or brush dirt off lightly after wearing. Store in the shoe bag and box and be sure to tuck crushed tissue paper inside the shoes. This helps maintain its shape and absorb humidity and prevent mould from forming.

  • Ebony and beige GG print ripstop recycled polyester
  • Low rise, white rubber sole with black detail

4. Gucci Silk Crepe De Chine Shirt (S$1,850)

A button-down shirt in a luxe fabric like silk is a staple of any sophisticated closet. This silk crepe de chine shirt adds a quiet, in-the-know style element in the form of round interlocking G embroidery at the shirt’s midsection.

A fibre produced by silkworms, silk has long been coveted for its soft texture and sheen. Silk crepe de chine, produced by twisting the yarn, is more wrinkle-resistant and slightly more matte compared to other silks. For best results, dry clean or hand-wash with liquid detergent, as powder detergent might cause bleaching. Iron on the lowest setting over a pressing cloth to avoid direct heat contact.

  • Comes in green or black silk crêpe de chine
  • Features retro interlocking G buttons and embroidery
  • Long sleeves and point collar

5. Gucci Knit Wool Jumper with Square GG (S$1,850)

Wool doesn’t just keep you warm,  it’s also stain-and wrinkle resistant, and helps dispel odours thanks to its moisture control properties. This knit wool jumper features a sporty stripe around the chest for a ’90s preppy vibe. If you plan to wear it on your next cold-weather vacation but worry about keeping it clean, bring a soft garment brush to remove dust or dirt. Hang the jumper in the bathroom when you shower, to freshen it up via light steaming. When you’re back, handwash in cold water with a gentle detergent specifically meant for wool. Dry flat and avoid storing in plastic bags, which trap moisture in humid Singapore.

  • Comes in blue knit wool with ivory strip details, or ivory with blue details
  • Crewneck jumper with square GG embroidered patch

6. KWANPEN Zip Long Wallet in Alligator or Crocodile Skin (S$2,310 to S$3,080)

Exotic leathers like crocodile and alligator skin have always been prized for their rarity and beauty. These classic zip-around wallets from KWANPEN showcase the organic, tactile nature of reptile skin, with scales undulating across the surface.

Surprisingly, crocodile leather is much softer than the reptile’s tough reputation would have you think. This means that it also needs a commensurate amount of care. Avoid exposing your wallet to light for long periods of time and wipe clean with a cotton chamois cloth before storing. Moisturise with a product specifically designed for reptile leathers and always apply in the same direction as the scales.

  • Comes in alligator or Niloticus crocodile leather, multiple colours
  • Zip-around enclosure with two main compartments and 12 card slots

7. Gucci Ophidia GG Small Shoulder Bag in Canvas (S$3,350)

The metal eyelets and studs of the Gucci Ophidia GG Small Shoulder Bag lend a punk edge to the label’s classic GG Supreme canvas print. This is crowned by the standout green and red web detail on the bag’s flap.

The GG Supreme canvas isn’t just coasting by on its iconic looks – it’s also a hardy fabric, known for its water resistance and durability. While it’s a tough material, Gucci still recommends that you avoid carrying items heavy enough to distort the bag’s shape. If your Ophidia GG Small Shoulder Bag gets wet, dry immediately with a soft cloth and avoid keeping it in direct light – otherwise, it might discolour.

  • Beige and ebony GG Supreme canvas with brown leather trim
  • Green and red Web detail, paired with blue and red Web shoulder strap

8. Saint Laurent Giant Bowling Bag in Suede (S$3,590)

This Saint Laurent Giant Bowling Bag is large enough to satisfy even the most enthusiastic over-packer. In a rich brown suede reminiscent of the louche ’70s, the bag comes with tubular leather top handles as well as a cross-body strap for ease of carrying.

Suede is the underside of an animal hide and thus should be treated gently. Avoid getting suede wet as it will become brittle and stiff after drying. Before your first use, brush off any lint or dirt and then deploy a suede protector spray all over. Maintain regularly with a soft-bristled brush to remove dust. Be sure to brush in the direction of the nap, for a smooth appearance.

  • Oversized zip bowling bag in tan brown suede
  • Comes with adjustable and detachable cross-body strap

9. Gucci Diana Medium Tote Bag in Leather and Bamboo (S$5,500)

This reformatted bag from Gucci’s ’90s archives is available in soft pastel shades – such as this buttery beige – in 2024. Carry it by the iconic bamboo handles as a top-handle bag for more formal occasions or sling the longer leather handles around your shoulder when running errands.

While looking after the leather material, don’t neglect the bamboo handles. Try to keep the leather belt handle shapers on when the bag is not in use, to ensure the bamboo handles don’t lose their form.

  • Beige leather with double bamboo handles
  • Additional double leather handles
  • Comes with two decorative leather belt handle shapers
