Chris Hemsworth to play Hulk Hogan in biopic for Netflix
The wrestling star will be a consultant and executive producer for the movie.
Chris Hemsworth is set to portray wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic on Netflix.
Netflix has obtained the exclusive life rights and consulting services from Terry Gene Bollea, also known as Hulk Hogan, reported film news site Variety.
The project is expected to deal with the early years of Hogan’s ascent into fame, starting with the Florida wrestling circuit in the late 1970s and him becoming the face of the World Wrestling Federation in the 1980s, where he frequently squared off against Andre the Giant as a villainous fighter.
By the end of the 1980s, Hogan was on magazine covers, appearing on nightly talk shows and even headlining a Saturday morning cartoon.
Most recently, Hogan was embroiled in a sex tape scandal, which led to a legal battle against the now-defunct entertainment news site Gawker. Hogan eventually received US$31 million (S$41.93 million) in a settlement.
However, the biopic will not cover Hogan’s tumultuous years in the 21st century, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Director Todd Philips and co-writers John Pollono and Scott Silver will be working on the Hogan project, noted The Hollywood Reporter. Producing the film are Hemsworth, Michael Sugar, Philips, Bradley Cooper and Eric Bischoff. Hogan will act as a consultant on the movie as well as executive producer.
