KJ Apa remembers screen dad Luke Perry: 'He would call my parents every week'
The Riverdale actor disclosed that he and his late co-star were almost like a real father and son. "It's not every day that you come across a guy like Luke."
Actor Luke Perry’s death last month from a massive stroke left friends and family bereaved, including fellow Riverdale actor KJ Apa, who played his son, Archie Andrews.
On The Tonight Show, Apa shared details about the relationship the two had, revealing that it mirrored that of a real father and son.
"Luke is the kind of person who did everything he can to make whoever you are – no matter how big or how small – feel comfortable and feel welcome. It's hard to put into words how that makes me feel,” he told host Jimmy Fallon, adding, “It's not every day that you come across a guy like Luke.”
In an emotional chat, the 21-year-old shared that in addition to looking out for him while filming in Vancouver, Perry was also close to Apa’s parents, who live in New Zealand, where Apa is from.
“He made such a huge effort from the beginning,” the actor said. “He would call my parents every week and keep them updated on how I'm going. If I had a cold or something, he would say, 'I took some Gatorade to his apartment the other day.’”
Riverdale’s now-airing third season is set to conclude on May 15. The show has been renewed for a fourth season.
