Hong Kong singer-actress Gillian Chung and her Taiwanese husband Michael Lai have begun divorce proceedings after signing the papers on Mar 1, according to 8world, which ran the story on Friday (May 8). The couple got married in 2018.

This means that the couple will be going their separate ways after less than two years of marriage.

8world reported that Lai, a doctor, told Taiwanese media that Chung simply “doesn’t love me” and that trouble began brewing as early as after their May 2018 wedding banquet in the US. However, Chung had already signed up to participate in a reality show together with her husband so she could not do anything about it.

Lai tried to salvage the relationship by flying out to visit her during shoots, but it seemed that love was not meant to be, and Chung, who is one-half of the Cantonese group Twins, brought up a divorce again while Lai was visiting her in Malaysia in February.

The 39-year-old Chung replied to the divorce reports through her agency, saying: “This is eventually a personal matter between Michael and I, and I will just say that we still respect each other. I don't want to comment anymore and will not be replying to any further questions on the marriage.”
