Actor Ansel Elgort has responded to accusations that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl.

The allegation first surfaced on Friday (Jun 19) in a now-deleted post where the person with the Twitter handle @Itsgabby wrote a text note with the caption, "my story of Ansel Elgort" where she said she was “sexually assaulted a couple days after I turned 17.”

Elgort responded on Instagram on Saturday (Jun 20) that Gabby’s version of events “is simply not what happened”.

The Baby Driver and The Fault In Our Stars actor said that in 2014, the pair had a “brief, legal and entirely consensual relationship" when he was 20.

The legal age of consent in New York is 17.

He did admit, however, that he “did not handle the breakup well” and stopped responding to her, “which is an immature and cruel thing to do to someone.”

He said he is “disgusted and deeply ashamed of the way I acted.”

“I am truly sorry. I know I must continue to reflect, learn and work to grow in empathy."

In Gabby’s initial post, she alleged that she had sent the actor a DM on social media two days before she turned 17. The two later met up and during sex, she claimed to have “disassociated” herself and had gone into shock.

It’s reported that Gabby has now deleted her social media accounts.

Elgort is the star of the upcoming Disney film, West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg.
