'Now you’re lying about me': Ariana Grande hits back at Grammys producer
The 25-year-old singer will not be attending the Grammy Awards because she says her self-expression and creativity were stifled.
Ariana Grande has backed out of the 2019 Grammy Awards happening Sunday evening (Feb 11, Singapore morning), following a disagreement with the show’s producers over her performance.
Grammys producer Ken Ehrlick told the Associated Press yesterday (Feb 7) that the singer “felt it was too late for her to pull something together,” but Grande is now accusing Ehrlich of lying.
In a series of tweets, Grande wrote: “i’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me. i can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken.”
The Thank U, Next hitmaker claimed her “creativity and self expression” were “stifled” and she ultimately decided not to attend the Grammys.
“i hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more,” she added.
Variety reported that producers refused to allow Grande to perform her new single 7 Rings during the show. Producers then allegedly offered a compromise where the song would be performed as part of a medley, but remained insistent that they would get to pick the second song.
In her tweets, Grande stated that she offered three different songs and was shot down.
Last year, Lorde was reportedly not offered a chance to perform her own music despite the other (all male) Album Of The Year nominees getting solo performance. She was allegedly offered a spot on a group tribute to Tom Petty, which she reportedly declined.
In 2017, Frank Ocean slammed Ken Ehrlich in a Tumblr post after the producer called the singer’s 2013 Grammys performance “faulty” and “not great TV”.
Grande is nominated for two awards: Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Her new album, Thank U, Next, will be released today, along with the album’s third single, Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.
