Netflix tweeted a Lady Whistledown-styled announcement on Friday (Apr 1) – and one that Bridgerton fans will not be too happy to know: Rege-Jean Page, who plays the swoon-worthy Duke of Hastings, will not be appearing in the second season.

"Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Rege-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” the tweet read.

"We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family. Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear."

The news did not come as a surprise to Page as he told Variety: “It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end – give us a year. [I thought] ‘that’s interesting’ because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on”.

Fans of the Julia Quinn novels, which the series is based on, would not be taken aback either as the first book, The Duke And I, has been played out in season one of Bridgerton.

The British-Zimbabwean star noted that each book and each season are dedicated to a different sibling’s love story. “One of the things that is different about this [romance] genre is that the audience knows the arc completes,” said Page. “They come in knowing that, so you can tie people in emotional knots because they have that reassurance that we’re going to come out and we’re going to have the marriage and the baby.”

Page has called his experience on the wildly successful show, “The ride of a life time”, on Instagram.

For starters, he has won the NAACP Image Award for outstanding actor in a drama series – the first acting prize for Bridgerton. He is also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for his individual performance, while the series is nominated for a SAG Award for outstanding performance in an ensemble in a drama series.

Shonda Rimes, who produced the series, also posted a tribute to Page on social media.

The duke will still live on in the Bridgerton world as Daphne's (played by Phoebe Dynevor) husband but he will not appear on screen.

So, what's in store in season two then? As Lady Whistledown has let on, it will focus on Anthony (played by Jonathan Bailey), the oldest of the Bridgerton clan, and his quest for love.

Based on the second book in Quinn’s series, The Viscount Who Loved Me, the new episodes will introduce Kate Sharma (played by Simone Ashley).
