Celebrated Hong Kong director and action choreographer Corey Yuen was revealed to have died in 2022 due to COVID-19. Yuen's death was first alluded to by veteran actor Jackie Chan in a post on his Weibo page on Monday (Aug 12).
The post shows Chan celebrating the 65th anniversary of Yuan Jia Ban – a clan of students who trained under Chinese martial arts master Yu Jim Yuen. Members of Yuan Jia Ban include Chan, Yuen and Sammo Hung.
Towards the end of his post, Jackie Chan paid tribute to members of Yuan Jia Ban who had died – listing "Yuen Kwai" as one of them. Yuen Kwai is the Chinese name of Corey Yuen.
Shaolin Soccer actor Tin Kai-man later corroborated the news in an interview with Hong Kong news outlet HK01. In that interview, Tin revealed that Yuen died in 2022 due to COVID-19 and that his family requested to keep the news private.
The death was also confirmed by the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers.Â
Born in 1951, Yuen spent his childhood training alongside Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. In 1981, he directed his first movie Ninja In The Dragon's Den which starred Conan Lee and Hiroyuki Sanada.
Throughout his career, he has worked with multiple A-listers including Stephen Chow, Anita Mui, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. The last film he directed was 2006's DOA: Dead or Alive – an adaptation of the hit video game. However, he continued to work as a fight coordinator or second unit director in such movies as The Man With The Iron Fists (2012), which starred Russell Crowe, Rick Yune and Dave Bautista.Â
