‘It’s just a song I love’: Ed Sheeran surprises fans with new track Afterglow
The Shape Of You singer announced the song on Monday (Dec 21) but wanted fans to know that it’s not the first single off a new album.
With a little over a week to spare before 2020 comes to an end, singer Ed Sheeran has sneaked in a new song. Sheeran announced the surprise track on social media on Monday (Dec 21).
The new tune is called Afterglow, his first since becoming a father, and Sheeran wanted everyone to know that it’s not the first single off an upcoming album.
Instead, “it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too”.
The Shape Of You singer ended his note with, “Back to dad land for me now”.
Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn announced the birth of their daughter – Lyra Antarctica – in September this year. He has been taking an extended break from both music and social media since December last year.
Afterglow marks his first release since 2019’s No 6 Collaborations Project.
In the song, he sings: “We were love drunk waiting on a miracle / Trying to find ourselves in the winter snow / So alone in love like the world had disappeared / Oh I won’t be silent and I won’t let go / I will hold on tighter ’til the afterglow”.
He teased the track on social media the day before, calling it a “Christmas present”. He added in his Monday post that he wrote the song last year.
