Malaysia's Good Vibes Festival 2024 cancelled to respect king's coronation
The music festival was previously cancelled in 2023 after The 1975 frontman Matty Healy kissed a male bandmate onstage during a performance.
Organisers of the Malaysian music festival Good Vibes Festival announced on Monday (Jul 1) that the event was cancelled "out of respect" for the upcoming coronation ceremony of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, the 17th King of Malaysia, which is set to be held on Jul 20 at Istana Negara.
The cancellation came hours after Malaysia's Central Agency for Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes Committee (JK-PUSPAL) issued a statement, asking organisers to reschedule concerts involving foreign artistes on Jul 20.
Citing its guidelines, JK-PUSPAL said that organisers are prohibited from holding such concerts on dates deemed unsuitable by the government.
Good Vibes Festival 2024 had been scheduled to take place on Jul 20 and 21 at Resorts World Awana in Genting Highlands, with a line-up including Glimpse Of Us singer Joji, South Korean singer-rapper Bibi and South Korean DJ Peggy Gou.
In the cancellation announcement, the organisers of Good Vibes Festival said that rescheduling the event was not possible due to the festival's nature which involved multiple touring acts. As such, all ticketholders will receive full refunds via their respective payment methods.
This marks the second consecutive year of Good Vibes Festival getting cancelled. In 2023, authorities halted the event after The 1975 frontman Matty Healy kissed a male bandmate onstage. Following the cancellation, artistes and vendors scrambled to make the best out of the situation, with Australian singer The Kid Laroi holding an impromptu mini-concert at his hotel bar.
Healy later defended his actions, claiming that the band was "briefly imprisoned" after the kiss.
