i Light Singapore festival returns with its 10th edition on May 31

Brighten up, the immersive outdoor art experience, i Light Singapore (iLSG), will be returning for its 10th edition from May 31 to Jun 23.

Organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), this year’s edition will stretch beyond Marina Bay, South Beach and Millenia Walk. For the first time, iLSG will bring its artworks to Tanjong Pagar, in partnership with Discover Tanjong Pagar.

It will feature 17 artworks inspired by the theme Cyclical Nature and the colour green. The 25 artists include international and local talent, who explored the potential of everyday objects for re-design, restoration and repurposing.

Here are some of the highlights visitors can look forward to.

1. SPIN ME A YARN
Where: Mist Walk 

The larger-than-life artwork features three oversized yarn balls, each with a long trail that loops around its surrounding environment. Designed by UK-based Studio Vertigo, a multi-disciplinary design and fabrication studio, the work examines the unsustainable practices that underpin our modern lifestyles.

2. KINETIC PERSPECTIVE
Where: Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza 

Kinetic Perspective is an immersive abstract geometric experience inspired by optical illusions. To create the installation’s continuously moving circles, Spain-based Juan Fuentes Studio used upcycled iron remnants from industrial sources. 

3. LIMINAL;MINIMAL
Where: Waterfront promenade in front of Red Dot Design Museum

Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) students, Benjamin Lim and Yeo Soon Yii used repurposed materials from building sites to create Liminal;Minimal. Juxtaposed against the cityscape along the Marina Bay waterfront promenade, it spotlights the issue of construction waste.

4. BOTTLEBLOOMS

Where: Tanjong Pagar Park at Guoco Tower, Tras Link Park near Orchid Hotel Singapore

BottleBlooms is a display of solar-powered luminous plastic blossoms in a green public space. Local industrial designer Yun created the artwork using about 1,000 upcycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles that were gathered from a public collection drive by Discover Tanjong Pagar, Cantonment Primary School and social enterprise City Sprouts.

5. KICKIT TEAM TENNIS
Where: Discover Tanjong Pagar Community Green
 

As the name suggests, Kickit Team Tennis is an interactive light art game that can be played by two teams of up to five-a-side. This interactive light installation, designed by Hungary-based artist collective Limelight, encourages visitors to interact and collaborate with strangers.

6. HIDDEN GARDEN
Where: Tras Link Park
 

Hidden Garden by Hungary-based Koros Design studio features trees adorned with light art inflatables resembling different flowers. The artwork illustrates the co-existence of nature with the urban environment. 

7. LUMI
Where: Fountain Plaza, South Beach Avenue Level 1

Lumi by women-led art collective, 65 SQM @ SUSA SPACE, is a dynamic artwork shaped like a meandering river. This interactive installation invites visitors to sit on, play with and move the illuminated yoga balls wrapped in upcycled net fabric. 

8. THE LANTERN
Where: Courtyard between South Beach Tower and The Grand Ballroom, Level 1
 

The Lantern is a luminous pavilion made out of over 5,000 upcycled plastic water bottles. Designed by Josephine Pun Tsz Kiu from the National University of Singapore, it symbolises renewal while serving as a reminder of the waste we generate.

9. MODERN GURU AND THE PATH TO ARTIFICIAL HAPPINESS
Where: Millenia Walk (The Great Hall)

This artwork features the Modern Guru – a translucent ovoid with four imposing large digital eyes suspended above a spiralling ring of LEDs. It was designed by Australia-based art and technology studio ENESS, and is a commentary on the role that technology plays in shaping perceptions of fulfilment in the digital age.

iLSG 2024 will be held from May 31 to Jun 23, 2024, 7.30pm to 11pm daily with extended hours to 12am on Fridays and Saturdays.
