Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? If you answered "Kang Daniel" instead of “SpongeBob SquarePants”, you would, surprisingly, be correct.

The 25-year-old singer-songwriter who debuted in 2017 as a member of K-pop group Wanna One will be collaborating with the popular Nickelodeon cartoon in a global project.

Konnect Entertainment, which Kang founded in 2019, announced on Thursday (Jun 23) that it will be working with Paramount Pictures, SpongeBob SquarePants’ distributor worldwide, to produce a character based on him alongside a range of merchandise.

Nickelodeon Asia shared in an Instagram post that the merchandise, which ranges from pens and tote bags to phone and laptop cases, will be available on Konnect Entertainment’s online store from Jun 24 to Jun 30.

The character looks uncannily like Kang and can be seen grinning with SpongeBob and his friend Patrick Star in the designs displayed.

Prices for the items range from 4,000 Korean won (S$4.32) to 28,000 won, excluding delivery fees.

Longtime fans of Kang, also known as Danitys, would be aware of his affection for the animated characters, especially Patrick. He occasionally shares images of the characters on his Instagram account, including on New Year’s Eve last year.

According to entertainment portal Soompi, a Paramount Global spokesperson said: “I’m really happy to announce the collaboration between SpongeBob and Kang Daniel.

“Like SpongeBob, Kang Daniel is popular all over the world and receives much love, so I am sure that this collaboration will be greatly popular.”

After Wanna One’s contract expired in 2018, Kang went into solo projects with the EP Colour On Me. His first studio album The Story was released in May this year.

Outside of singing, he also acts, with a lead role in the Disney+ web series Rookie Cops.
