Louis Tomlinson’s friendship with Zayn Malik ‘never really got better’ after 2016
Malik had skipped Tomlinson’s tribute performance to his late mother, causing a rift between the former One Direction members.
Louis Tomlinson revealed that his friendship with Zayn Malik “never really got better” after Malik skipped his tribute performance to his late mother in December 2016.
Speaking on The Dan Wootton Interview podcast on Friday (Mar 8), the former One Direction member admitted that Malik’s no-show at his performance on The X Factor “really bugged” him.
“Truthfully, it never really got better to be honest. I had a couple of calls with him after I lost my mum and, you know, all the boys had agreed to come to that performance and he didn’t show, and that really bugged me,” said the 27-year-old singer.
“Everyone showed and it was a moment of... I got goosebumps there, and seeing Harry [Styles], Niall [Horan], and Liam [Payne], that was what I needed that night, that support.”
Louis' mother Johannah died after a battle with leukaemia at the age of 43 in December 2016, leaving behind Tomlinson and his six siblings. Just four days later, Tomlinson released the Steve Aoki collaboration Just Hold On, and performed the song on The X Factor finale on the day of its release, dedicated to his mother.
One Direction rose to fame after being formed on The X Factor in 2010. The boyband went on to sell over 50 million records worldwide with five studio albums. Malik split from the group in March 2015 and One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus from 2016.
Last week, Tomlinson released Two Of Us, a song dedicated to his late mother. It is unclear if the single, his first under Arista Records, will be included on his debut album.
