The top nine contestants for radio talent hunt show The Star Voice have been revealed. The hopefuls – aged between 20 and 29 – will battle it out in a series of challenges on the unscripted reality show, all in the hopes of becoming Mediacorp’s next radio personality.

After getting through the different challenges with guidance from one of three celebrity mentors – Dennis Chew, Pan Jiabiao and Zhong Kunhua – one contestant will walk away with more than S$80,000 worth of cash and prizes, including a brand new Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid and a one-year contract with Mediacorp.

Now meet the nine fresh voices vying to make waves on local radio.

Eleanor is a fresh graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Chinese Studies. As a student, she took part in various student-run events to expand her social circle. While the competition is her first step into the radio industry, her cheerful personality and energetic voice might be just what she needs to bring warmth to listeners.

Esther Leong, 25, freelance performing artiste

As a graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) Mandarin Theatre programme, Esther knows a thing or two about performing for a rapt audience. Outside of the arts, she also participated in the Miss Singapore 2019 pageant, where she clinched a position in the top eight and awards for Miss Inspiration and Miss Harmony.

Jeff Tan, 29, audio-visual journalist

One of the two men in the competition and the oldest contestant, Jeff doesn’t see his age as a barrier to pursuing his dream of becoming a radio DJ. He certainly has the technical know-how for it, having been a journalist in Taiwan for the last five years. If you follow online news, there’s a good chance you’ve already heard his voice as he’s filmed and edited entertainment features.

Jensen Wang, 26, university graduate

Fresh out of the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Bachelor In Communication And New Media course, Jensen has held a passion for the arts since his days in his high school theatre club. This passion is what drives his desire to step out into the world and tell compelling stories with his own flair.

Joey Tay, 27, civil servant

Joey sees herself as a born performer, with fond memories of singing, acting and hosting on stage as a student. She’s no stranger to competitions, having taken part in Mediacorp’s Campus SuperStar in 2013, beauty pageants as an undergraduate and even winning CapitaStar’s #HelloIAm social media ambassador contest in 2021. Taking on what she calls the journey of a lifetime, she hopes to inspire others to chase their dreams and follow their hearts.

Kelly Wong, 29, YouTuber

As part of the team behind local YouTube channel Wah!Banana, Kelly’s both a familiar face who knows how to work in front of and behind the camera. She’s been in several programmes for the channel and has also dipped her toes into television acting. She hopes to win over audiences with her fierce passion, love for performance and unique sense of humour.

Kharissa Pundarika, 24, news reporter

Coming from Indonesia, Kharissa has been as a Mandarin news reporter for Indonesian TV station MetroTV for more than a year, which is where her love for the media industry first blossomed. While being a radio DJ will be a whole new ball game for her, she hopes to discover new possibilities for herself.

Sammi Tan, 21, undergraduate student

She might be the only contestant so far with her own hashtag asking others to #JointheSammiCircle, but it’s not without reason. The third-year business student at the Singapore Management University (SMU) has dabbled in a range of performing arts from hosting to singing and dancing. Her bubbly personality and willingness to try new things might be what helps her achieve her goal of bringing positivity to her listeners.

Yunis To, 28, advertising model and video host

Malaysia-born Yunis is a multi-hyphenate in her own right. The self-professed gym rat also launched a new chain of concept fruit stores across the Causeway in Johor Bahru. Stepping out of her comfort zone through the competition, her goal is to learn new things and discover more opportunities while touching listeners’ hearts through her voice.

The Star Voice will be available every Thursday from Jul 21 on meWATCH, meLISTEN and Mediacorp Entertainment’s YouTube channel.
