Once Upon A One More Time: Britney Spears musical headed to Broadway
The musical will feature over 20 tracks by Spears.
Britney Spears’ iconic discography will serve as the soundtrack to a new fairytale Broadway musical, reported The New York Times yesterday (Mar 12).
Once Upon A One More Time, a musical comedy, is scheduled to preview in Chicago on Oct 29 and open on Nov 13 with a limited run to Dec 1. It will feature over 20 of Spears’ tracks, as well as “a couple of deep album cuts”.
However, the musical will not be based on Spears’ personal life, which has been far from a fairytale.
In the musical, Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty come together for a fortnightly book club discussing the Grimms’ fairy tales, until a fairy godmother brings unexpected material.
“Cinderella is having an existential crisis, and she has a posse of famous princesses, and her stepmother is the main antagonist, and there’s also Prince Charming and a dwarf we’ve never met — the eighth dwarf — and a narrator who is unhappy his system is being dismantled before his eyes,” said writer Jon Hartmere, of The Upside and Bare.
“These women have been in this hermetically sealed world, and then they start to get deeper into modern ideas — second and third-wave feminism — and also explore how stories are passed down to us, and where we get our norms from. But it’s also superfun and funny.”
Hartmere said Spears attended one of the show’s several readings. The 37-year-old singer has been on hiatus from her Las Vegas residency since January this year as her father recovers from surgery for a colon rupture.
Since debuting in 1999 at the age of 18, Spears has remained one of pop’s biggest stars for two decades.
“I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs – especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,” Spears said in a statement. “This is a dream come true for me!”
