Sowing discord: Peppa Pig labelled sexist for using “fireman” over “firefighter”
The London Fire Brigade is working to dispel attitudes that women are not suited for the job.
Peppa Pig has been branded a sexist for discouraging girls from becoming firefighters.
In a recent episode of the hit animated series, Peppa Pig used the term "fireman" when describing Mummy Piggy dressed as what should be referred to as a firefighter.
Most would have missed it, except the London Fire Brigade tweeted at the pig’s handle, saying “Come on @peppapig, we’ve not been firemen for 30 years. You have a huge influence on kids & using out of date stereotypical gender specific wording prevents young girls from becoming firefighters.”
Peppa Pig, once labelled a gangster figure in China after becoming the subject of memes and underworld association, has not replied to the London Fire Brigade.
The fire brigade went on to share more information about women in its force, admitting that taking on Peppa Pig “sparked a lot of debate”.
“We challenge outdated language for girls like Grace who get told they can't become firefighters because 'firefighters are men'. Hopefully it won't take another 30 years for people to accept that we're all firefighters.”
