MEXICO CITY: Ronda Rousey, mixed martial arts superstar-turned-actress, was taken to hospital after nearly losing a finger in an accident while filming US drama series 9-1-1.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday (Aug 21), Rousey can be seen lifting up her broken middle finger while she lies on a hospital bed, accompanied by her husband Travis Browne.

"Freak accident, first take of the day a boat door fell on my hand," said Rousey.

According to entertainment website TMZ, the accident occurred in Mexico, where Rousey was filming season three of the series.

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship Women's Bantamweight champion said that she thought she had "just jammed (her) fingers", and finished the take before she looked at them.

"I know it sounds crazy but I'm used to live audiences and never showing pain unless I'm supposed to," she wrote on her Instagram page.

Rousey was taken by ambulance to a San Diego hospital for treatment, where she underwent surgery to reattach her finger.

"I returned to filming the next day and finished my scenes before returning home to recover," she said, adding that she had 50 per cent of motion back in her fingers in three days.

Rousey plays firefighter Lena Bosko in the 9-1-1 series, which follows the lives of Los Angeles' first responders. She is also signed to entertainment company WWE as a professional wrestler.
