Patek Philippe’s highly sought-after green Nautilus appears at auction

Demand for the Ref 5711/1A-014 – released just this year – is sky-high, but one piece will soon go under the hammer in Monaco, with its plastic packaging still intact.

Since Patek Philippe’s olive green Nautilus was unveiled just a few months ago, the timepiece has created incredible hype among watch collectors and enthusiasts. That's because the Ref 5711/1A-014 is the successor to Patek Philippe’s legendary blue-faced steel Nautilus, the latter having ceased production.

It’s almost impossible to get your hands on the timepiece. With a limited production, demand has outstripped supply, and collectors are likely be put on a long waiting list, said a spokesperson from the brand.

“Even my sons are asking, ‘Can I have one?’,” Thierry Stern, CEO of Patek Philippe, said in an interview with WatchPro.  “But the answer is no. On the positive side, though, it’s part of the beauty and myth of Patek Philippe.”

The olive green Nautilus was introduced to quell fervour for the storied blue-dial Nautilus on the secondary market. Now the timepiece has appeared at auction, complete with box and papers.

Swiss auctioneer Antiquorum will offer the Ref 5711/1A-014 olive green Nautilus as part of its upcoming Important Modern & Vintage timepieces auction in Monaco, scheduled for Jul 21. It marks the first time ever that the model has appeared on the auction circuit.

Interestingly, the timepiece also comes sealed in a bag, meaning it has never been worn or touched since leaving the factory. Back in 2017, Patek Philippe banned authorised retailers from selling watches this way. Plastic packaging for all watches have to be removed in order to prevent grey market activities. It’s a wonder how this particular timepiece still has its packaging intact.

The timepiece has a pre-sale estimate of between €50,000 to €150,000 (S$80,121 to S$240,363). Along with the green-dialled Nautilus, other rare Patek Philippe lots that will be offered at the Antiquorum auction include a steel Aquanaut with extremely rare red “plum” dial, and a stunning Art Deco-inspired jewellery set consisting of a ladies’ wristwatch, necklace and bracelet made of 18K yellow gold, onyx, coral and diamonds.
