Air Canada, Canada's largest airline, will end its Vancouver-Singapore route next year, with the last flight from Singapore currently scheduled for Jan 26, 2027, Changi Airport Group (CAG) confirmed in a statement to CNA Lifestyle on Thursday (Sep 24).
As a result, there will no longer be any direct flights between Singapore and Canada.
CAG, which manages Changi Airport, added: "While the suspension of this service will remove Changi's only direct air link to Canada, Singapore remains connected to North America via multiple direct services, as well as a range of one-stop options.
"CAG will continue engaging airlines on opportunities to strengthen Singapore-Canada connectivity and support the development of new and existing services where there is demand."
Air Canada's Vancouver-Singapore service began in April 2024 and is currently operating four times a week.
In a statement to CNA Lifestyle, Air Canada said that it is suspending the service "for commercial reasons".
"Despite significant efforts and resources invested in the Vancouver-Singapore route for close to three years by Air Canada and other partners, the route regrettably did not meet the business targets that would enable this service to remain sustainable," said the airline.
Among the economic factors affecting the route were commercial demand, its ultra-long distance of 12,818 kilometres, "together with the current cost of fuel which makes ultra-long flights inefficient due to the additional fuel requirements and associated fuel burn", added Air Canada.
"As a result, Air Canada has made the difficult but necessary decision to redeploy its fleet to other markets where demand and other economic factors are better aligned."
The airline confirmed that it will still serve Singapore through codeshare agreements with Star Alliance partners.
"Air Canada's code is on Singapore Airlines' operated flights (to Narita, Incheon, Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Brussels) and also on ANA's operated flights (to Tokyo-Narita and Tokyo-Haneda), which connect to/from Air Canada-operated flights via these airports," said Air Canada.
