Golding's character in the GI Joe reboot is known to be a ninja commando who doesn't talk – but don't worry, he will speak in the film as it focuses on his origin story.

The first trailer for the GI Joe reboot Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins is out and we finally get to see Henry Golding play the titular character – a masked ninja commando clad in all-black who doesn’t speak.

Fortunately for Golding’s fans, we do get to see  – and hear – the actor as the film focuses on the character's origin story, presumably before he stops speaking and dons the helmet. He even says a line in the trailer, as if to assure us of this.

The minute-long video, which debuted at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday (May 17), doesn’t reveal much about the plot but we do see Golding training to become a ninja warrior for the Arashikage ninja clan, which, as we’re told in the trailer, has been bringing peace to the world for 600 years.

We also get lots of action and fight scenes including a swordfight on the roof of a moving car. There's also Samara Weaving as Scarlett – Snake Eyes’ ally – and Ursula Corbero as The Baroness.

Golding recently told Entertainment Weekly (EW) that he wanted the film “to look different, to feel different”.

He said: “To be able to launch a franchise like that, it was just too good to be true – and especially with a character like Snake Eyes about whom a lot of people don't know too much. They know him as this insane operator that completes missions and is an absolute weapon, but who's the guy behind the mask and what's his story?"

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura also told EW that the film will answer some key questions about the character, such as his real name, who he is and where he came from.

Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins is set for release in Singapore on Jul 22 and is a complete reboot of the franchise after two previous films: 2009’s GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s GI Joe: Retaliation. The character of Snake Eyes was played by Ray Park in those two films.

Other stars in the reboot include Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Tahehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.

The 34-year-old Golding and his wife Liv Lo recently welcomed their first child on Mar 31.
