Hong Kong director Benny Chan has died on Sunday (Aug 23) at the age of 58 years old.

According to Hong Kong media Apple Daily, he was suffering from nasopharyngeal cancer.

Tributes have started pouring in for him online, with one from actor-director Stephen Fung who starred in Gen-X Cops. He wrote on Instagram that he was “shocked to hear” of Chan’s passing.

Fung also called the late director “a strong force behind Hong Kong cinema”.

Actress Jeana Ho, who acted in Chan’s last directorial work Raging Fire, wrote that she was fortunate enough to get to know the director while working on the film last year. She also thanked him for his guidance.

Chan was not able to complete post-production work on Raging Fire, which also stars Donnie Yen of Ip Man fame, due to ill health. He had been in hospital for the last few months.

Chan received a Best Director nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his work on 2004’s New Police Story that starred Jackie Chan. He also directed hits like Shaolin, which starred Andy Lau and Nicholas Tse.
