It’s time for Patrick Star, SpongeBob Squarepant’s affable best friend, to take centre stage.

According to Deadline, TV network Nickelodeon is finalising deals for The Patrick Star Show, a spin-off focusing on Patrick the starfish as the main character.

The entertainment industry portal reported that Patrick will still be voiced by Bill Fagerbakke and that voiceover recordings have already started for the project with a largely new cast of voice actors.

It’s expected to run for 13 episodes with the same creative team behind the original series working on it.

Deadline cited sources who said that the show is expected to revolve around Patrick and his family and will be “in the vein of The Larry Sanders Show and Comedy Bang! Bang! with Patrick hosting his own late-night talk show".

The good news for those who love the original is that SpongeBob cast members are expected to make occasional appearances.

This will be the second spinoff for SpongeBob, after the prequel series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, which is slated for release next year.

SpongeBob was launched in 1999 and is now seen in more than 208 countries and territories with the animated show translated into more than 55 languages.
