British actor and dialect coach Andrew Jack has died at the age of 76 after he contracted COVID-19.

Jack’s agent Jill McCullough announced the news on Wednesday (Apr 1), adding that he died in a hospital in Surrey, England.

She said: “Andrew lived on one of the oldest working houseboats on the Thames, he was fiercely independent but madly in love with his wife, also a dialect coach, Gabrielle Rogers.”

Jack was known for appearing in the Star Wars films as Major Ematt in The Force Awakens, and whose character was later promoted to General in The Last Jedi. Besides on-screen appearances, Jack also had a voice role as Moloch in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Besides acting in the Star Wars films, he was also a dialect coach on several film franchises including Guardians Of The Galaxy, The Avengers and Lord Of The Rings. At the time of his death, he was working as a dialect coach on the Matt Reeves Batman film.

“Dialect coaching isn't just about being good at accents – you need to make your actors feel safe and confident – and Andrew's actors adored him,” said McCullough.

Unfortunately, his wife was stuck in quarantine in Australia at the time and was not able to see or talk to him before he died. McCullough said that there is also a chance a funeral may not be held.

Batman director Reeves posted a tribute to Jack on Twitter, writing: “Andrew was a legend, and such a kind man.  We are all absolutely heartbroken.  Our hearts go out to his family. Rest in peace, Andrew...”

JJ Abrams, who directed the seventh and ninth episodes of the Star Wars franchise, posted a photo on Twitter that read: “Andrew Jack was as lovely as they come. Our brilliant dialect coach on The Force Awakens… he was so handsome we had to cast him. Sending love to his friends and family. He will be missed.”

Lord Of The Rings actor Sean Astin also shared a tribute on Twitter, calling Jack “powerful and gentle in equal measure”, “funny” and “brilliant”.
He added that Jack “made a mean curry” and that “he loved a unique theory of gravity, that we are all being pushed down, instead of pulled down”.

“We loved Andrew Jack,” he ended.

Christopher Miller, who was executive producer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, wrote: “Andrew Jack was the dialect coach on SOLO, and a kind and thoughtful man. We asked him to teach Alden to speak Shyriiwook, and I’ll always remember listening to them gargle-roar at each other back and forth. RIP.”
