Comedian 'Uncle Roger' opens fried rice restaurant in Kuala Lumpur

Popular Malaysia-born comedian Nigel Ng, known for his online persona 'Uncle Roger', opened a fried rice restaurant in Malaysia's Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (Sep 11). The restaurant, called Fuiyoh! It’s Uncle Roger, saw snaking queues during its grand opening – with fans reportedly queuing up for over three hours.

The 33-year-old's Uncle Roger persona has become an internet icon following a steady stream of viral videos over the years – including one that showed him reacting in disgust to a fried rice preparation video by BBC Food presenter Hersha Patel.

As Uncle Roger, Ng wears an orange polo tee and black pants, and speaks in an exaggerated Cantonese accent.

Now, fans can see for themselves if Uncle Roger can walk the talk. A plate of Uncle Roger’s Egg Fry Rice starts at RM16 (US$3.70) – with diners being able to add sauces, like pineapple mayo, Thai chilli and sambal belacan (shrimp paste chilli), at an additional cost.

Those who want a heartier meal can add proteins to their dish. These include grilled unagi (RM29), two sunny-side-up eggs (RM6) and chicken satay (RM12).

The restaurant also sells sides such as mala popcorn chicken (RM27) and mala okra fries (RM18).

As part of the festivities, Ng will also attempt to set a Guinness World record for most people dressed as Uncle Roger. The attempt will take place on Sep 14 at Pavillion Kuala Lumpur. Those who are interested in being part of the event will need to turn up in a plain orange polo tee, black pants, a black phone belt case, and black or white shoes.
