All-female hijabi heavy metal group Voice Of Baceprot (VOB) is set to be the first Indonesian band to play at the iconic Glastonbury Festival, which takes place at Worthy Farm in the county of Somerset, England. They will perform on Jun 28.Â
The band comprises three Muslim women who wear the hijab, or headscarf – lead singer and guitarist Firda Marsya Kurnia, 24; drummer Euis Siti Aisyah, 24 and bassist Widi Rahmawati, 22.
“Never would have thought we could play at a stage like Glastonbury. It still feels like a dream too high for us to achieve," Siti, or Sitti as she prefers to be known, told Singapore publication The Straits Times (ST).
Marsya added that while they’re proud to play at Glastonbury, they’re also slightly apprehensive as they will be representing their country.
Glastonbury will be VOB’s biggest gig yet, and they told ST that they will perform a mix of old and new songs.
“We’ve been working hard and it’s been almost every day. All we want is to do Indonesia, and our fans, proud,” said Sitti.
News of their Glastonbury performance broke on May 2.
The three women grew up in rural West Java province. They met in 2014 during their secondary school days in their hometown, Garut, about a four-hour drive from Jakarta.Â
Just last year, they released their debut album Retas. They performed in several cities in the United States of America in 2023 and have also performed at Germany’s Wacken Open Air festival in 2022.
VOB was also listed among the trailblazers in the entertainment and sports field in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia Class of 2024.
This year’s Glastonbury Festival will be held from Jun 26 to 30.
