On Wednesday (Sep 4), At Area – the agency of South Korean singer Hyuna – announced that it will take legal action against rumours and malicious comments surrounding the 32-year-old entertainer.
The former 4Minute member has received a lot of criticism from fans since revealing her relationship with singer Junhyung – who has been linked to South Korea's Burning Sun scandal. The nationwide incident saw many South Korean entertainment figures such as former BigBang member Seungri and singer Jung Joon-young implicated in crimes including sexual bribery and gang rape.
Criticism towards Hyuna intensified in recent weeks following her marriage announcement and her subsequent pre-wedding photos which were posted on her social media pages.
In a statement to the media, At Area said: "Since the announcement of her marriage, defamation [against Hyuna] has been carried out to a level where we can no longer stand by and watch.
“We decided to take strong action because the production and distribution of rumours that are completely different from the truth have become increasingly serious, especially since the release of the wedding pictorial.”
At Area revealed that they were planning to sue those who were involved. However, they were asked by Hyuna to "show leniency".
"We would like to emphasise that we will take strict legal action against malicious rumours in the future without any warnings, leniency, or agreements, as a minimum measure to protect her personality.”
Hyuna and Junhyung are set to marry sometime in October. According to South Korean news outlet Sports Chosun, the wedding is set to take place on Oct 11 at Samcheonggak – a mountainside resort in the neighbourhood of Seongbuk-gu in Seoul, South Korea. The outlet added that the couple had registered for the venue a few months ago during springtime.
