On Monday (Aug 7), Cartoon Network Asia released the pilot episode of the new Tom And Jerry cartoon series set in Singapore on their YouTube channel – giving fans a first look at the series' art style and Singapore-centric themes.
Judging from the three-minute short, local fans of the iconic franchise will have nothing to worry about.
The episode opens with a wide shot of Marina Bay as we move to Tom in a high-rise apartment, indulging in durians. It's clear from the animation that these durians are smelly which causes various items in the house (including a maneki-neko) to react negatively.
The odour finally makes its way to Jerry, causing him to choke and accidentally drop a few plates onto Tom's head. Classic Hanna-Barbera-esque shenanigans ensue as Jerry tries to get rid of the durians while Tom does his best to protect his stash.
The hijinks culminate in a scene where Jerry launches a firecracker at Tom, only for it to ricochet back to him. The impact causes Tom's durian to splatter all over Jerry, making him realise what Singaporeans already know: Durians taste amazing.
Having seen the light, Jerry reconciles with Tom as they share Tom's last durian.
