Star Awards 2024: All That Glitters up for the most awards, Andie Chen has double nominations
The annual show celebrating local Chinese entertainment’s best will take place “live” on Apr 21 with the theme of “Ignite, Inspire, Impact, Influence”.
Star Awards season will return in April and nominations have just been released for local Chinese entertainment’s biggest red carpet event of the year.
Leading the pack in nominations is the gritty drama All That Glitters, which follows a group of pals from youth to adulthood as they strive for wealth at the expense of their friendship.
The show has 11 nominations with Desmond Tan and Jeremy Chan up for Best Actor, Chantalle Ng up for Best Actress and Zhang Ze Tong up for Best Supporting Actor. It’s also in the running for Best Drama, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
On the acting front, Andie Chen has double nominations: He’s up for Best Actor for his work in the suspense drama Silent Walls, and also for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the dialect drama Whatever Will Be, Will Be. Andie, 38, has been nominated numerous times over the years but never won, so with a double entry and a bit of luck, this year may just be his year.
Other Best Actor nominees are Chen Han Wei for his work in Whatever Will Be, Will Be, and last year’s winner Richie Koh for his role in Cash On Delivery.
Cash On Delivery, about food delivery riders during the pandemic, also performed well with seven nominations including a Best Drama gong and a Best Actress nod for first-time nominee Jernelle Oh, who played a delivery rider with cerebral palsy.
Also in the running for Best Actress are Kym Ng for Till The End, Joanne Peh for SHERO and Rui En for Oppa, Saranghae!.
Other Best Supporting Actor nominees are Darren Lim for SHERO, Peter Yu for Cash On Delivery and Zhu Hou Ren for Till The End.
Up for Best Supporting Actress are Aileen Tan for SHERO, Chen Liping for The Sky Is Still Blue, Hong Hui Fang for Strike Gold, Jin Yin Ji for Cash On Delivery and Ya Hui for Family Ties.
This year’s live red carpet and awards ceremony show, happening on Apr 21 at Stars Avenue, takes the theme of “Ignite, Inspire, Impact, Influence” and will feature four chapters of tributes and performances, each dedicated to one of the aspects. “Ignite” celebrates young talents and rising stars, “Inspire” spotlights supporting artists and programme hosts, “Impact” is dedicated to performers with high accolades and “Influence” is all about popularity award recipients.
The seven-hour Backstage LIVE commentary marathon is also set to return.
Like last year, there will also be a separate closed-door Gala Night on Apr 15 for the Programme and Creative Achievement awards, held at Zouk Singapore.
This year also sees more recognition for radio DJs with the introduction of a new Best Audio Personality award. Along with the Best Radio Programme accolade, this category will be judged solely by a panel of professional judges.
Fans can already start preparing for the voting categories, with the Best Theme Song category already open and voting for the artist popularity awards commencing in March.
